AUTOGENIC ATTENTION: a simple experiment in perception by Igor Santizo

Description of the Venue

“The only thing that is not art is inattention.”
_Marcel Duchamp

“There is no such thing as silence. Something is always happening that makes a sound.”
_ John Cage

“If music can be seen (or rather heard) as a mirror of consciousness, then its also fair to read the changing forms of music as maps of the changing shapes of human consciousness.”
_ Erik Davis, The Future Mix

…

Any object perceived, is seen differently depending on the quality and method of observation used to perceive it. Ie: What is the smell rather than sound of a vinyl record? Or: what is the temperature, say different from the light intensity, in a room?

An object of study is a multiply faceted one, when we recognize that it will be seen differently depending on which sense or method is used. As well, how an object’s qualities might be technologically perceived or augmented will reveal new facets of the complex. Ie: ultrasound to view a baby, or the way quantum-soup phenomena is dissected.

On the human scale, sense perceptions therefore are the embodiement and subjective filters that mediate consciousness with the phenomenal world, as the function of our changing and malleable attention.

Aesthetic experience is under the influence of our socially constructed judgements, while addedly, how conceptually and phenomenally we shape our ideas or attention in appreciation, will result in a different aesthetic “object”. Ie: Thinking of an old master’s painting as an ironing board. (as Duchamp did) Or: participating in the meditation Rinzei Zen arts, like flower arrangement.

This pliable aesthetic attention, as it pivots and conceives of new ways of seeing, can be a self-emergent material in itself. Conceptual art has shown how an idea alone can be art. However, at a root level of mind, what is the relationship between aesthetic production and consciousness itself. How could the fabric and prescence of our consciousness function as part of a whole and interdependent stratum of object, self, other and world? What does an Aesthetics of Consciousness point to in art?

This virtual venue is thought of as an invitation, in the spirit of participatory perception. AUTOGENIC proper is defined as that which is: originating or derived from sources within the same individual.

This here is a simple experiment in perception, carried out as desired, where you may be the observer as well as the experiment in one. Here the virtual noise city is silent and the real is allowed to emerge.

NO SOUND WILL BE PRESENTED THROUGH THIS VENUE.
STOP AND OBSERVE THE INBORN SOUNDS AND PHENOMENA IN THE ROOM.
EXPERIENCE SUCH A MOMENT AS IF FOR THE FIRST TIME.
NOTE YOUR SENSING AND SELF-EMERGENT ATTENTION AT WORK.
CARRY OUT THIS SIMPLE PERCEPTION STUDY AS LONG AS DESIRED.

RENEW.
